Simonsberg Hike

Stellenbosch

Activity Description

The ascent of Simonsberg is a steep, demanding hike starting from the Tokara/Uitkyk side with prior permission – a permit is required. The route climbs steadily on a jeep track before narrowing into a rocky mountain path through fynbos. As you gain height, the trail becomes steeper and looser, eventually reaching an exposed upper slope leading to a short scrambling section below the summit ridge. Though non-technical, it requires good balance and fitness. From the top, hikers are rewarded with sweeping views over Stellenbosch, the Banhoek Valley, and the Drakenstein peaks. Return via the same route, taking care on the steep descent.

WeatherThe weather on the mountain can change in an instant so a light mid-layer and a rain jacket will ensure that you stay dry and warm if we find our selves in between the clouds.
What to WearWell supportive closed-toe walking shoes with good grip are a must. Cape town does experience very hot days in the summer and a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and water will be needed. A long sleeve button-up shirt with a collar provides great sun coverage.

The route is steep and physically demanding, gaining around 1 000 m in a relatively short distance, with loose gravel, rocky steps, and a short scrambling section near the top. The upper ridge is very exposed to wind and there is no water available on the route, so bring at least 2–3 litres.
